“I respect the court’s decision and as governor, I will uphold its ruling. Also, as I have said in the past, I will not support an amendment to the Constitution that would overturn this state Supreme Court ruling.”
— Arnold Schwarzenegger, California’s Republican governor, responding to yesterday’s ruling by his state’s Supreme Court granting gay couples the right the marry.
To be clear, I am impressed by Schwarzenegger’s position. It’s rare to see an open-minded Republican. I am not impressed with the attempt to modify California’s constitution to overturn the ruling.
